Shawala Point Labyrinth - Landscape Art for Peace
The Walk as One at 1:00 for peace, is within an 88' man-in-the-maze style labyrinth. It is a free World Labyrinth Day event on the first weekend in May 11 AM - 3 PM. It is located beyond the skate park of 2nd and 'B' street free parking area, in the Corvallis Riverfront Park. It is a short walk on a wide paved bike path trail, under the overpass, out to the point from the free parking area.
I am inspired to create landscape art installations the invite peace, joy and transformation. This place, Shawala Point, has been used as summer camping grounds for the Kalapuya Tribe, a lumber yard in the turn of the century and now as a beautiful natural open space part of the Corvallis Park and Rec. I often have walked this path with my pooch. Often when I walked around this open area, it spoke to me. Almost as if it was calling for something to bring people together again, here. I kept seeing and feeling a labyrinth in the tall grass. Open space is vital for health and well being of communities. As a landscape architect, I design for the open space, much like art. However, open space does not need to be unused space. The labyrinth allows people to spend more time, here. More time to feel the two rivers coming together, the trees with critters and yes, even the noisy overpass of cars and trucks going where they need to go. This place, Shawala Point, has transformed through the years, from the river and from people. It is a beautiful example of how we can invite Nature into our life today, as a vital part of creating our tomorrows, together.
This was the fourth year for this landscape art installation and event. However, the first couple years I created the art, I just couldn't believe I did it. I couldn't believe in it's significance enough to share it widely. My confidence in sharing it grew, especially when I witnessed the profound impact it gave people who walked it. So, this year I extended the time for which people can walk the labyrinth. It was available April 20th for Earth Day, for the Planet Palooza event that took place at the nearby skate park. I hope that many people walked the path, feeling the footsteps of those before.
